What causes a urinary tract infection?

Urinary tract infections are very common and are caused by bacteria (usually Escherichia coli) from the perineal area entering the urinary tract through the urethra. The risk of a urinary tract infection is increased by:

weakened mucosal defenses (common in women after menopause)
sexual intercourse (bacteria around the urethra can be pushed upward during intercourse)
diabetes
prostate problems (usually in older men)
backflow of urine from the bladder into the ureters (especially in young children)

Is a urinary tract infection dangerous during pregnancy?

Pregnant women have a slightly higher risk of urinary tract infections, partly because hormonal changes affect the body's mucosal defenses. Leaving a urinary tract infection untreated during pregnancy is not advisable, as it can lead to a kidney infection, among other things. An untreated infection can also increase uterine contractions, which in turn may trigger labor earlier. A UTI during pregnancy should therefore always be treated. If you suspect that you have a urinary tract infection, speak to your midwife or contact a doctor immediately.
