The most common cause of stomach ulcers is the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. In fact, around 80% of people with stomach ulcers carry this bacterium, which fortunately is relatively easy to treat with medication.

A stomach ulcer means that sores have formed in the lining of the stomach or duodenum. Stomach ulcers can be caused by several different factors, but in most cases Helicobacter pylori is a major contributing cause. Fortunately, this bacterium can be detected with a simple self-test.

Common symptoms that may suggest a stomach ulcer include pain in the middle of the upper abdomen, a gnawing feeling of hunger or sometimes reduced appetite instead. Stomach ulcers can also cause more general and sometimes relatively pronounced physical discomfort. The symptoms can therefore vary considerably from person to person.

Note! An open or perforated stomach ulcer is an acute condition requiring immediate medical care. If you experience severe and persistent pain in the upper abdomen, often combined with vomit that may resemble coffee grounds, you should seek medical care urgently. Vomit may also be black, which can be a sign of bleeding. Likewise, an open stomach ulcer can cause stool to become darker than usual due to bleeding, sometimes almost black.
