Canine parvovirus (CPV)
Canine parvovirus (CPV) is a highly contagious virus that primarily affects dogs, but can also affect other animals such as foxes and raccoons. The virus is spread through direct contact with feces or vomit from infected animals. CPV affects the intestines of dogs and can cause severe gastroenteritis, which includes symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, dehydration and weight loss. Dogs most at risk for CPV are puppies and young dogs under six months of age, and those that have not been vaccinated against the virus. There is no specific treatment for CPV, but treatment focuses on managing and relieving symptoms. Vaccination is the best way to protect your dog from becoming infected with CPV.
