How is hemoglobin levels measured?

Hemoglobin is like the blood's oxygen carrier – it ensures that oxygen gets to all the cells in the body so you can feel good and have energy. It is measured in something called grams per liter (g/l), and for men a normal value is between 130 and 170, while for women it is between 120 and 150. If your hemoglobin becomes too low, you can develop anemia, or anemia as it is also called. It can make you tired and lack energy. But if the value becomes too high, the blood becomes thick and the risk of blood clots increases. What does a low hemoglobin level mean?

A low hemoglobin level, also known as anemia, means that you have too few red blood cells in your blood and that the transport of oxygen in the blood is therefore reduced. Anemia is defined as <120 g/L for women and <130 g/L for men. The most common cause of a low blood count is iron deficiency, but anemia can occur with other conditions such as chronic intestinal diseases, stomach ulcers and bleeding from hemorrhoids. Deficiencies of vitamins B12 (cobalamin) and B9 (folic acid) can also lead to anemia. Women may have a low Hb level during pregnancy and menstruation.

What does a high hemoglobin level mean?

An elevated blood count is defined as >155 g/L for women and >170 g/L for men. You should take high hemoglobin levels seriously, as they may indicate a serious underlying medical condition. An elevated hemoglobin level may occur due to changes in fluid balance and dehydration caused by insufficient fluid intake or excessive fluid loss through sweating, diarrhea or vomiting. Once you are properly hydrated, the value should return to normal. At high altitude, where the oxygen level is lower, the body increases the production of blood cells, causing the blood count to rise. Even if you do not have an underlying condition, it is important to address a high hemoglobin level. Persistently high hemoglobin levels can lead to complications such as blood clots, heart attack and stroke.

What is the difference between Hb and iron levels?

Hb, the hemoglobin level, is often incorrectly assumed to be the same as the iron level, which is something entirely different. Hb shows the amount of iron-containing protein found in all red blood cells. To assess iron stores, it is more reliable to measure ferritin in the blood, which shows how much iron is stored and available in the body. If the body runs out of iron stores and therefore cannot produce enough Hb, the blood count (Hb) falls. This is called iron-deficiency anemia, or a low blood count due to iron deficiency.
