Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by bacteria. The most common way to become infected is through sexual intercourse without a condom.. You can also get infected through oral sex. Syphilis develops in 3 stages - primary, secondary and tertiary syphilis. The incubation period is about three weeks to three months for the primary stage, seven to ten weeks for the secondary stage and several years for the tertiary stage. In primary syphilis, the infection can be transmitted to others through sexual contact. In the later stages, the infection is passed on through the blood, which means that the fetus can be infected. What are the symptoms of Syphilis?

Some people experience symptoms, while others may have the infection without noticing it. In primary syphilis, an ulcer appears, usually on the genitals, around the anus or at the mouth. Swollen lymph nodes in the groin may also occur. The sores are usually painless and between one and two centimeters in size, which means that they can sometimes be difficult to detect. Although the sores can heal on their own after two to eight weeks, this does not mean that you are free of infection. You are still carrying the infection and it is important that you receive treatment. Diagnosis is always made by a doctor. Syphilis is classified in Sweden as a public health hazard according to the Communicable Disease Control Act. Infection tracing is therefore mandatory. The infected person is advised to refrain from sexual intercourse until a course of antibiotics has been completed and a control test is available that is free of infection. The number of cases of sexually transmitted infections is increasing, including syphilis. Starting the correct medication is important, preferably at an early stage.
