Fever thermometer

Of Fredrik Lönnqvist - 25 October 2022

We have all used a fever thermometer. Just a few years ago, the classic rectal thermometer was what most households had. It was not always a particularly popular thermometer. Today there are alternatives that measure with the same reliability. Fever thermometers come in many different models and use different technologies. It really is a jungle, and it is easy to simply buy the first thermometer you come across. But remember that a thermometer often lasts for many years, which is why we carried out a thorough review before deciding which thermometers should be included in our range. Click here to read more about our fever thermometer.

Quicktest has chosen to offer the classic ear thermometer as well as an IR thermometer. We made this choice in consultation with a physician and a pediatric nurse (specialist-trained, with a total of four years of education).

Many people find it awkward and uncomfortable to take their temperature with a regular fever thermometer. With an IR fever thermometer or an ear thermometer, rectal measurement can be avoided. The IR thermometer measures body temperature easily, safely and hygienically without even touching the skin. This has changed and, above all, simplified temperature measurement when you have a fever.

Fever thermometers are for both adults and children

A fever thermometer with infrared measurement is an excellent choice for both children and adults. An IR thermometer makes it possible to take a temperature safely, and today's models are also highly reliable.

This makes temperature measurement easy for you as a parent and completely painless for the child, who may otherwise find rectal measurement with a regular fever thermometer uncomfortable, especially when the temperature needs to be checked several times a day. Note that rectal measurement is still the method used for clinical diagnosis today.

For this very reason, strict CE-marking requirements apply to fever thermometers. Our thermometers are, of course, CE-marked.

Temperature measurement with an IR or ear thermometer is quick, easy and safe

A fever thermometer is particularly practical when it comes to children. Many children dislike having their temperature taken, but this can now be a thing of the past. As a parent, you can feel confident that it provides a reliable measurement of your child's body temperature. Fever thermometers with infrared measurement use advanced technology that has developed rapidly in recent years. As a result, they are in many cases more reliable than measuring with a regular thermometer in the mouth or armpit.

Measurement is also significantly faster with an IR thermometer than with a regular thermometer. Our IR fever thermometer displays the result immediately, while regular thermometers often require a minute to obtain a reliable measurement. During that time, the thermometer must also remain still in the rectum, ear or under the tongue. Now you can measure in one second, completely without contact.

IR measurement is hygienic

A regular fever thermometer can become a source of infection. Who wants to put it in their mouth when it may previously have been used somewhere else? Because the IR fever thermometer uses infrared technology, no touching or skin contact is required, so it stays clean and hygienic for everyone in the family.

IR thermometers are used in hospitals, care homes and primary care centers, among other places. The main reasons are hygiene as well as the fact that they are quick and easy to use.

Tips for taking a temperature

Before checking for a possible fever, whether with an IR thermometer or a regular fever thermometer, we recommend doing so after the person has rested for at least 30 minutes. It is therefore preferable to take the measurement first thing in the morning before the person gets up. Note that body temperature is slightly higher in the afternoon than in the morning.

It is worth knowing that physical exertion is not the only thing that can affect body temperature. Mental stress can also raise body temperature.

For adults, normal body temperature is between 36.1 and 37.8°C. However, newer research indicates that body temperature varies from person to person - some people have a lower and others a higher normal temperature. It can be useful to record the temperature and time. This helps you learn your own or your child's normal temperature.

Children normally have a slightly higher temperature than adults. One tip is to measure your child's body temperature even when they are healthy, so you know what their normal temperature is. Body temperature can vary considerably from one person to another, but temperatures above 38°C are classified as fever.

Summary

  • An IR fever thermometer is hygienic
  • It measures and provides a result in 1 second - without contact
  • Measure without waking a sleeping child
  • Measure when you or your child are healthy as well
  • If possible, measure first thing in the morning
  • Learn your own or your child's normal temperature

Find the right test in 1 minute

We offer three types of tests - choose the one that suits you best.

Self-test: quick response at home directly.
Lab test - sampling at home: Take the sample yourself and send it to a lab for analysis.
Lab test - sampling clinic: sampling at a clinic or sampling site.

You will receive clear information about what the test shows, how it is used and what the next steps may be.
