Diabetes is a common disease that causes elevated blood sugar (glucose) levels. This condition is called hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). People with diabetes have a greater risk of developing complications such as retinopathy (retinal disease), blindness, kidney damage, nerve damage and circulatory problems that can lead to heart disease and stroke. It is therefore important to seek medical attention early after a positive result to help prevent these complications.
