What is a blood pressure monitor?

A blood pressure monitor is a device used to measure blood pressure. Both digital and non-digital monitors are available. Ours are digital because they are generally considered easier to use for people without medical training. Our blood pressure monitors are intended for human use (for people, not for example dogs or cats), and all monitors are CE-approved.

How our blood pressure monitors work

Our digital monitors use oscillometric measurements and electronic calculations rather than auscultation. They may use manual or automatic inflation, but both types are electronic, easy to use without training and can be used in noisy environments. They measure systolic and diastolic pressure through oscillometric detection, using either deformable membranes measured by differential capacitance or differential piezoresistance, and they include a microprocessor. They accurately measure mean blood pressure and pulse, while systolic and diastolic pressures are obtained with somewhat lower accuracy.

Tips for measurement

• Measure while seated
• The cuff should sit about 2 cm above the bend of the elbow
• You should be able to fit 2 fingers under the cuff
• Rest for 10 minutes before measuring
• Measure at different times
• Always measure twice and record the average
