Do I have tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis often causes severe pain in the throat and pharynx. The pain can sometimes be difficult to understand for those who have never experienced tonsillitis.

The symptoms are quite clear, however:

  • Fever
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Sore throat when swallowing

It is often difficult to eat solid food because the pain is too severe.
Tonsillitis is actually an infection of the tonsils. By far the most common bacterium causing this infection is Group A Streptococcus. The infection often resolves on its own, but because of pain and a severely affected general condition, it is not uncommon for it to be treated with antibiotics.
In addition to symptoms such as a sore throat, fever and swollen lymph nodes are common. The lymph nodes can sometimes feel like small balls under the skin at the angle of the jaw, approximately 5 cm below the ears (adult).
