Self-test for blood in the stool

Having blood in your stool is relatively common., it can be caused by many different things. The most common are hemorrhoids and cracks in the anus (anal fissure), which are usually completely harmless. In some cases, blood in the stool can be a sign of more serious diseases, such as colon cancer or Crohn's disease. If you have blood in your stool, it should always be investigated by a doctor for further investigation and treatment. Our self-test for blood in stool is a simple self-test that gives you answers right away. The test is called F-Hb. Simply put, it detects if there is blood in the stool. F stands for “Feces” which is Latin for feces, Hb stands for Hemoglobin which is blood.

How is the test done?

It is known that hemorrhoids do not bleed all the time. Therefore, stool is collected for three consecutive days to increase the possibility of detecting intermittent (recurrent) bleeding. You do the test at home by testing your stool on a special paper, then using a test stick that is dipped in the stool, this stick is then placed in a tube containing a special diluent. The liquid is dripped into a test cassette. If there are traces of blood with a concentration higher than 10 ng/ml, the test shows positive. Note that the test does not require a special diet like many other tests.

Frequently asked questions

When might I need an F-Hb test?
Your stool should be examined if you have:
  • recurring bowel problems such as constipation or diarrhea that do not go away.
  • lost a lot of weight without knowing why.
When can this test be used?
The test can be performed at any time of day when you have a bowel movement (are able to produce a stool sample).
Can the result be incorrect?
The result is correct if the instructions have been followed. The result may be incorrect if the test becomes wet before use, if the sample is contaminated with blood from a source other than the stool (wounds, hemorrhoids, menstruation, etc.), or if the wrong number of drops is used.
Does the intensity of the lines in the test window matter?
The strength, color or intensity of the control line has no effect on or significance for interpreting the test result. If you can distinguish a line, it should be interpreted as a line. However, the lines should be complete/saturated.
What should I do if the test is positive?
If the result is positive, it means that blood has been detected in the stool sample and that you should contact a doctor. The doctor will then decide on further examination and treatment.
What should I do if the test is negative?
If the result is negative, it means that the test did not detect blood in the stool sample. People aged 45 or older, or those with relatives who have colorectal cancer, are recommended to perform a test every year.
How reliable is the test?
F-Hb tests have been used in healthcare for more than ten years. Evaluation reports show reliability of at least 93% using various reference methods. Although this test is reliable, false-positive or false-negative results can occur.
